Adobe Shockwave (2024 Edition)[8 Years Later]
Updated: August 13, 2025
In 2003, Macromedia released Director MX 2004, it’s prime-time editor for creating movies and games in the Shockwave format. In 2004, Director/Shockwave was purchased by Adobe. Years later in 2017, Director and Shockwave were discontinued by Adobe.
Now in the distant future, Shockwave is no longer incorporated in websites or supported by modern web browsers. Sadly, this leaves millions of movies and games unplayable as-is. This is where a little retro action comes in!
Adobe/Macromedia Director MX 2004
Surprisingly, the Adobe Director MX 2004 is still available for download from their website. We archived a version here as well:
Director MX 2004 10.1.0 Windows Installer
Director MX 2004 10.1.1 Windows Updater
Director 11 Hotfix 03 for Windows
While personally testing this (on Windows 10), I was able to get up to 11 Hotfix 03 installed. There is a 11.5 Hotfix 03 that I could not get to install, so I’ve excluded it.
Additionally, when Director reached it’s end of life, Adobe provided free license keys. That’s been archived here, and locally here: Adobe End of Life License Keys.
You can have fun using Director MX to create and export movies and games in .DCR file format. You can also use Director to open games you’ve decompiled (see below).
Playing Shockwave Games
Flashpoint Archive is probably the most popular and comprehensive Flash and Shockwave multimedia archives on the internet. It includes executables to play both Flash and Shockwave games. Within Flashpoint Archive is a standalone Adobe Director’s Projector specially modified and available as “SPR.exe” on their Github page. This is a portable application that does not require installation to open/play Shockwave .DCR files. I have personally tested this application without issues. This is the most trustworthy version that I can find, however still be aware that this is not from any official Adobe/Macromedia archive. You can download our local archived copy here: SPR.exe (Adobe Projector 12.0.1.122).
Shockwave Decompiler
I’ve stumbled upon this awesome (and working) open-source Shockwave decompiler: ProjectorRays
Of course, I’ve archived a local copy:
