Ocarina of Time: A Tale of Two Versions
December 31, 2023Retro Gaming ArticleThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time, but which version of the game is the ultimate one? The original Nintendo 64 release from 1998, or the 2011 remake for the Nintendo 3DS? Let’s take a look at some of the differences between the two versions and see how they stack up.
Graphics
The most obvious difference between the N64 and 3DS versions is the graphics. The 3DS version is the first port of Ocarina of Time that recreates the graphics, instead of simply porting over the N64 ones, to take advantage of the more powerful hardware and fit modern standards. The result is a much more colorful, detailed, and smooth-looking game, with improved character models, textures, lighting, and animations. The 3DS version also supports stereoscopic 3D, which adds depth and immersion to the game world.

However, the N64 version has its own charm and nostalgia, and some fans prefer the original graphics for their simplicity and style. The N64 version also has some graphical features that are missing or changed in the 3DS version, such as water reflections, fog effects, and shadows. Some of these changes are due to technical limitations, while others are intentional design choices.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Ocarina of Time is largely unchanged between the two versions, as both follow the same story, dungeons, items, and mechanics. However, the 3DS version does introduce some new features and improvements that make the game more accessible and enjoyable.
One of the biggest changes is the touch-screen interface, which allows the player to easily access the map, inventory, and items without pausing the game. The 3DS version also adds gyroscopic controls, which let the player aim the slingshot, bow, hookshot, and other items by tilting the system. Additionally, the 3DS version has a hint system, called Sheikah Stones or Gossip Stones, which provide visions of part of a quest or obtainable upgrade the player has not found yet.

The 3DS version also fixes some of the flaws and annoyances of the N64 version, such as the infamous Water Temple. The 3DS version adds icons beside each Triforce-plaque in the Water Temple, making it much easier to know how Zelda’s Lullaby will affect the water level in each area. The 3DS version also allows the player to equip the Iron Boots as an item, instead of having to pause the game and access the menu every time they want to sink or float in the water.
Extras
The 3DS version of Ocarina of Time also includes some extra content that is not available in the N64 version. The most notable one is the Master Quest, which is a harder version of the game with mirrored dungeons, different enemy placements, and more puzzles. The Master Quest was originally released as a bonus disc for the GameCube, but the 3DS version is the first one to make it available from the start.

Another extra feature is the Boss Battle Mode, which lets the player replay any of the boss fights they have already beaten, either individually or in a gauntlet. The Boss Battle Mode also records the time it takes to defeat each boss, adding a challenge and replay value to the game.
Conclusion
Both the N64 and 3DS versions of Ocarina of Time are excellent games that deserve to be played and enjoyed by fans of the Zelda series and video games in general. The N64 version is a classic that defined the 3D action-adventure genre and set a high standard for future games. The 3DS version is a faithful and polished remake that enhances the original game with improved graphics, gameplay, and extras.
Ultimately, the choice between the two versions comes down to personal preference and availability. The N64 version is harder to find and play nowadays, as it requires an old console and a cartridge, or a subscription to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The 3DS version is more accessible and convenient, as it can be played on a handheld system or a TV with a compatible device. Either way, the player is in for a timeless and unforgettable adventure..
